Worker-driven Social Responsibility is a proven model for defining, claiming, and protecting workers’ human rights. That is the conclusion of this report published by Harvard Law’s Center for Labor and a Just Economy authored by Susan L. Marquis as part of their Clean Slate for Worker Power project.
The report traces the origins of the Fair Food Program, evaluating the mechanisms by which it works both through interviews with primary sources and a review of other research. The literature review also includes a summary of the failures of Multi-Stakeholder Initiatives and Corporate Social Responsibility programs, supporting the final conclusion that the WSR model is a proven model that should be widely adopted.
In conclusion, the report examines the ways that U.S. policymakers can support the expansion of the WSR model. Suggestions include funding for additional pilots across new geographies and industries as well as leveraging public procurement.
